Orson; Concorde2
Sometimes when you book tickets for a band you've barely heard of, you come
up the proverbial trumps. A few years ago I saw Ten Benson, who even
today few people have heard of. I, and the other 5 people in the venue,
had a cracking time and I've always hoped they'd get big, partly so I could say
I've seen them when they were really small, and partly becuase they deserve it
on the back of a fantastic night out.
And then sometimes you get tickets for a band where you can tell the hype is
just beginning and think it's worth taking a shot at it. It's just a
tenner and one night. Orson was just one such band. And I want my
tenner and a night of my life back. I'm afraid they were dreadful.
Apparently the lead singer, and maybe the whole band, moved from LA to London because
they couldn't break the LA/USA scene, on the back of this it looks they're off
to France, or maybe even Germany (Although the lack of dodgy hair will impede
them), to try again. They were really dull, there is no other way to
describe them I’m afraid, on the occasions they managed to get above dull,
generic guitar rock, they sounded like a mix of Gary Newman meets the style
council. They brought in their biggest hit, My Bright Idea, halfway
through and barely raised a murmur at the front. A venue like Concorde2
should be simple for a top band (remember at this point they were No1 in the
albums charts) to get jumping. Orson just do not have the charisma or the songs.
